Gas Prices

The average price of gasoline has dropped a penny over the past three weeks to $2.05 a gallon.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that with the slight decline the price remains the lowest since 2009.

Lundberg says prices may continue to go down as crude oil costs drop and refineries run at a high rate.

The current gas price is 15 cents per gallon under its year-ago point.

In the Lower 48 states, the highest average price of regular gasoline is $3.01 per gallon in Los Angeles. The lowest is $1.64 in St. Louis.

The state average for Mississippi is $1.74. In Kosciusko, the lowest price is $1.79.

The U.S. average diesel price is $2.31 per gallon, down about 8 cents from 3 weeks ago. (AP)

Flu Season

State health officials are reporting the first case of influenza confirmed for the 2015-2016 flu season.

The Mississippi State Department of Health, in a news release Monday, said the patient is from Northeast Mississippi.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Thomas Dobbs says the confirmation by the Mississippi Public Health Laboratory serves as a reminder that it’s not too late to get a flu shot.

Seasonal flu vaccination is recommended for anyone age six months and older. Those 18 and under who are eligible for the Vaccines for Children program or the Children’s Health Insurance Program can receive the shot for $10.

Dobbs says the Mississippi flu season usually peaks in January through March. Nationwide, an estimated 49,000 people die and more than 200,000 are hospitalized each year because of the flu. (AP)

Attala County Skeletal Remains Identified as missing Kosciusko Teenager Mykendrionia “Mimi” Lewis

Friends, family, teachers, and classmates gathered Monday to say goodbye to a loved one that was taken too soon.

A funeral service was held Monday at the Tipton Street Church of Christ for 14-year-old Mykendrionia Lewis.

Mimi, as she was commonly called, went missing in May of 2015, and her body was found October 10 in the area known as Happy Hollow in eastern Attala County.

An autopsy report revealed that the official cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.

While her loved ones mourn and search for answers, authorities continue the investigation to find the person or persons responsible Lewis’ death.

The Attala County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation.

Sheriff Tim Nail tells Breezy News that his office is working closely with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Kosciusko Police Department.

Private investigators have also recently joined the search to find the teenager’s murderer.

FastStart

Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 6:00pm, Fast Start, a course targeted for new and aspiring business owners, will informally launch. That evening, those interested in participating in the course are invited to the KADC office at 101 N. Natchez St. in Kosciusko. John Brandon, Manager of The Entrepreneur Center at the Mississippi Development Authority, will be leading a workshop entitled “How to Start Your Own Small Business.” The course is open to any interested persons in the community.

Fast Start, a collaboration of Venture Incubator, Holmes Community College, and the Kosciusko-Attala Development Corporation (KADC), aims to provide new and aspiring business owners with the roadmap needed to successfully start and manage a business. During the six-week course, participants will be guided through the creation of a business plan by local experts/business leaders, individually assigned coaches, and the curriculum’s architect/instructor, Rob Burnham of Venture Incubator.

“During my short time in this community, I’ve been so impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit that is so pervasive here,” said KADC CEO Kel McDowell. “Fast Start is a great opportunity for those interested in doing business in Kosciusko and Attala County to undergo the processes of crafting a suitable business plan and pursuing the proper channels.”

The course itself is a structured program in which participants will carefully think through each step in creating a successful business plan. Each class session will feature a lesson tailored to examine important components of the business plan process and a guest speaker offering his/her expertise in a facet of business. Participants are expected to work diligently between class sessions to do the required work to keep up with class assignments.

“When designing Fast Start, I felt it was important that those participating carefully examine their market, their product, and themselves,” said Burnham. “Those who actively take part in the course will be sure to gain key insight that will help guide them on their journey to business success.”

Fast Start class sessions will be held Tuesday evenings at Holmes Community College, starting Jan. 26. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion from Holmes and the continued assistance of program facilitators.

The cost for the six-week course is $85. Those interested in Fast Start are encouraged to contact the KADC in-person or via telephone (662-289-2981).

Powerball/Lottery Not Likely to Come to MS Anytime Soon

Powerball

In 1992, 53 percent of Mississippi voters chose to overturn the state’s constitutional ban on lotteries. But the state appears no closer today to getting a lottery than it was then, even as residents stream across the borders of the Magnolia State to buy lottery tickets elsewhere.

State Rep. Alyce Clarke, a Jackson Democrat who has long introduced unsuccessful bills to create a lottery, says she hopes the huge Powerball jackpot could reopen the conversation, saying the state could use the money for things like college tuition or roads.

Other lawmakers, though, say they oppose lotteries for religious reasons, even though Mississippi has 31 casinos.

Clarke says she believes the prospects of Mississippi getting a lottery remain unlikely unless the lieutenant governor or House speaker advocate for it.

Would you like to see Mississippi implement a lottery system? Sound off in the comment section below.
