Kosciusko Lower Elementary has a brand new bell tower.

Administrators, teachers and students met Tuesday morning to officially present the tower to the school and community.

The bell tower was a combined effort between the Kosciusko School District, the Kosciusko Foundation for Excellence in Education (KFEE), and the Barksdale Reading Institute.

The tower sits south of Kosciusko Lower Elementary at what the school calls its Pre-K Village.

Many local businesses donated time and/or materials to aid the construction of the tower. Tiles along the base of the tower bear the names of companies and individuals that helped mbring the project to life.

The bell inside the tower has special significance for the Kosciusko School District. It was donated by the Porter Family in memory of Mr. Cadman Porter, a former Kosciusko High School principle.

Members of the Porter Family were honored guests at the ceremony.

The design and artwork for the tower were inspired by the late L.V. Hull, a noted artist from Kosciusko.

Those in attendance Tuesday were treated to several guest speakers and a performance of Amazing Grace by the KLE Kindergarten Choir.

Children of the Porter Family ended the service with the ceremonial ringing of the bell.

FFA students recently participated in a beautification project at Heaven is my Goal Outreach Ministries in McAdams.

When approached by Evangelist Martha Jones with the idea, the chapter was delighted to help someone they knew so well.  Some students knew her from the school cafeteria, some belonged to the outreach ministry, and a few of the pupils were also related to her.

“It’s always special to assist someone who is passionate about making an impact in the community, especially when it involves helping young people,”said FFA sponsor Kenneth Georgia.

Students were involved in the entire landscaping process which included classifying the soil type, calculating the amount of sunlight, selecting plant materials, drawing a design, and finally installing it.

“Evangelist Vicky Roby and I work with our young people during Bible classes on Tuesday nights, and we have plans to begin hosting a Youth Night on Fridays”, said Pastor Jones.

Students who participated were Mark Stewart, D’Mechriea Landfair, Mc Carvin Carter, Ty’Derrius Davis, and Jayla Gibson from Mc Adam High School. Kosciusko High students were Kaelin Wright and Trey Johnson.

Bryant seeks federal tornado aid for residents in Holmes and Montgomery counties

Residents of Holmes and Montgomery counties could get federal help following April 30 tornadoes, if Gov. Phil Bryant gets his way.

Bryant on Thursday officially asked that President Donald Trump declare a disaster. The Republican governor also asks Trump to approve assistance to governments and nonprofit utilities in Adams, Calhoun, Carroll, Claiborne, Holmes, Jefferson, Montgomery, Webster and Yazoo counties. That could pay to repair government property, remove debris, and cover emergency worker overtime.

Other counties could be added later if Trump approves.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says 112 homes without insurance were destroyed or severely damaged in Holmes and Montgomery counties. MEMA and federal officials have been conducting joint assessments.

The National Weather Service counted 29 tornadoes in Mississippi, the fourth-largest outbreak on record. One man died in Durant. (AP)
