Since 1952, the first Thursday in May has been a time when people all throughout the United States gather together “to turn to God in prayer and meditation,” on the National Day of Prayer.

Ministers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and other members of the community visited Red Bud Springs Park in downtown Kosciusko Thursday at noon to observe a time of prayer and reflection.

The ceremony opened with the playing of a ceremonial horn followed by a short prayer.

Following the prayer, the crowd was then divided into smaller groups where local ministers led prayer for the specific areas of government, military, media, business, education, church and family.

The groups all gathered together at the end of the ceremony to sing God Bless America.

Neshoba County teen charged in friend’s death (video)

The driver authorities say was responsible for his best friend’s death after a night of fun at last year’s Neshoba County Fair has been charged in the investigation.

Jonmark Gibson was charged with culpable negligence homicide in the death of his friend, Jeb Stuart. Gibson turned himself in and was released on a $35,000.

We spoke with Stuart’s mother, who did not want her son’s best friend charged with a crime

“Jonmark is living his punishment every day because he knows what happened to his ‘brother,’ what happened to his best friend,” says Brandy Stokes, Jeb’s mother.

Stokes says her son was leaving the fair grounds with three friends when the deadly accident happened. Jonmark Gibson was behind the wheel. He apparently lost control of the vehicle and crashed on County Road 147. Gibson and another friend were hurt. Jeb didn’t make it.

“He was a very caring, compassionate, humble and a kind soul,” says Stokes. “He was great child.”

Jeb and Jonmark grew up together and as the boys developed a close friendship over the years, their families essentially became one. Jeb’s mother says that hasn’t changed and she only wants to protect her other “son.”

“His mom and dad have been to the house to talk to us,” says Stokes. “They were like, we hate to even ask you to do this and I’m like I know y’all would do the same for us. And I know that Jeb would want me to do anything I can for Jonmark.”

On May 3, Gibson turned himself in and was charged with Jeb’s death. Even though Jeb’s family didn’t want Jonmark arrested, the district attorney’s office will present the case to a grand jury.

“Then we will see what the grand jury decides,” says Gibson’s attorney, Jeremy Chalmers. “It’s up to the grand jury to look at the evidence and decide if there is enough evidence there to have a trial.”

Jeb’s mother wants Jonmark to have a successful and productive life.

“I think that [Jonmark] could have such a great influence on the community in the future if he is given the chance,” says Stokes.

Stokes’ compassion, understanding and ability to forgive Jonmark is incredible.

The case will likely be presented to a grand jury in August.

Holmes Community College is proud to announce that District Director of Communications/Associate Athletic Director for External Relations Steve Diffey graduated May 4 from the Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy (MCCLA).

The graduation was held in the Hunter Henry Center on the campus of Mississippi State University. The MCCLA is organized around the practical needs for future community college leaders, specific to the Mississippi community college system. The program was developed in 2009 to address the projected need for upper-level leaders in the Mississippi community college system.

“I’m so thankful that Dr. (Jim) Haffey gave me the opportunity to attend this leadership academy,” Diffey said. “Dr. (Howell) Garner does an amazing job with MCCLA, and he put together topics that will definitely help in my job here at Holmes.

“The networking aspect is huge for MCCLA,” he added. “By bringing in people from the community college system and also some doctoral students from the four-year universities, MCCLA connects people from all different aspects of college business who have a vast knowledge of their areas. This helps you better understand what your coworkers do in their daily jobs and some of the challenges they face as well. MCCLA is a first-class event without a doubt.”

Diffey came to Holmes in 1998 as the assistant director of the school’s foundation and alumni. He became executive director of both offices in 1999 and remained in that position until 2002 when he joined the public information office as the assistant director. He became director of the office in 2004. He assumed the Associate A.D. role in Fall 2014.

Before coming to Holmes, Diffey worked in the newspaper business for five years – two in Winona at the Winona Times and three in McComb at the Enterprise-Journal. He holds an associate of arts degree from Holmes Community College, a bachelor’s degree in journalism from The University of Mississippi and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Mississippi State University.

He and his wife, Stephanie, have five children, Ethan, Tyler, Noah, Jesse and Anna.
