Possible Tornado Damage to North Attala (Audio)

A strong storm cell made its way through Attala County on Sunday morning. Most all the damage was located in northern part of the county. Kosciusko Police Chief Herbert Dew tells Breezy News that he has not had any reports of damage inside the city limits.

Emergency Management Director Danny Townsend tells Breezy that he believes that a tornado that was tracked on the ground from Holmes County made its way in to northern Attala County. There was reports of many large trees and power lines that were blocking many county roads. Townsend said that at this time there has been only one report of  property damage. Rock Hill Church on Highway 19 was reported to have a tree fall on the structure. Click the link below to hear the report from Townsend.

 


Holmes Community College in Goodman Sustains Damage in Sunday Storm

Severe weather ripped through Holmes County Sunday morning leaving many Homes and Businesses damaged and without Power.  The campus of Holmes Community College received damage from down trees and power lines.  Steve Diffey, spokesperson from Holmes, told breezynews that dorm students are asked to stay off campus tonight until power is restored and the campus is cleaned up.  Holmes’ students need to check their MyHolmes email or Holmes Social Media for status updates.

 

Businesses and Homes Damaged in Durant

The city of Durant has suffered heavy damage in the wake of the Sunday morning storm.  Many homes and businesses have been affected.   Among those businesses were Howell and Heggie Drug Store and Allen’s Furniture. Rae Ann Haffey with Howell and Heggie told breezynews that the storm blew out the front window and ripped the metal sign off the building.  With clean up crews on the scene, Howell and Heggie expects to be open for business tomorrow.  William Allen of Allen’s Furniture also told breezynews that his business sustained roof damage and heavy damage to a warehouse.

 

Natchez Trace Festival 2017 (video)

Thousands of visitors from all around the state and southeast flocked to downtown Kosciusko over the weekend for the 48th annual Natchez Trace Festival.

The weekend’s festivities started Friday night with family night that inlcuded a concert in Renasant Bank park.

Bright and early on Saturday, the festival kicked off the with the Renasant Bank 5K run.

Repeat Street, Gasoline Alley, Repeat Street, KFD train rides, and the Live Music Stage all returned for this year’s festival.

New to the festival this year was a petting zoo sponsored by the Attala County FFA. FFA director Kenneth Georgia said animals were donated by several local farms, the Museum of Natural Science, and the Jackson Zoo.

Festival organizers were pleased with the turn out and would like to thank all those that volunteered their time to help with this year’s event.

 

 

Whippet baseball/softball tonight from Boswell Media Sports

Boswell Media Sports will provide coverage of both Kosciusko Whippet playoff games tonight.

On Breezy 101, join Phillip Palmertree for Kosciusko Whippet baseball.

The Whippets will face the Indians of Itawamaba AHS in game three of the second round playoff series. The Whippets won game one Friday 6-4, but dropped game two 10-0 Saturday in Fulton. The winner of tonight’s game will go on to play Ripley in the North State Semifinals.

First pitch for tonight’s game is set for 7:00 pm. Airtime is approximately 6:45 on Breezy 101, Breezynews.com, and the Breezy 101 app.

Kosicusko Whippet softball returns to the airwaves tonight as the team opens the third round of the playoffs.

Kosciusko Cardinals to hold final early bird registration this weekend

The Kosciusko Cardinals FINAL early-bird registration is Saturday, May 6 from 10:00 AM -Noon.

Registration will be held at the Kosciusko Whippets practice field behind Wendy’s.

This will be the last day to register your child for $100.00.

Beginning Sunday, May 7, the registration fee is $150.00.

New players should bring a copy of their birth certificate.

Letter to the Public From Sheriff Nail

The strong storm that moved through the northern part of Attala county showed just how the community comes together in a time of need. Sheriff Tim Nail, in a media release on Monday, praised the selfless actions of all the emergency personnel and private citizens alike. Nail said  ” I would like to offer my thanks to those individuals that assisted with the storm damage that was inflected on this past Sunday, April 30, 2017. Law Enforcement Firefighters, and road crews handled their duties as expected, whether on-duty or off”  The Sheriff goes on to say “I would also wish to give my humble and heartfelt appreciation to those private citizens that left their homes and personal affairs behind and selflessly assisted.”

Local groups collecting donations for storm victims

In lieu of the recent storm damage to Attala and Holmes Counties, several churches, groups, and other organizations are collecting to donations for those affected by the storms.

In addition to donations, many volunteered time Sunday to help clear the roads and aid emergency personnel in any way they could, prompting Attala County Sheriff Tim Nail to write a personal thank you to the community.

See below for a list of groups accepting donations.

We will continue to update this list as more groups send in information.

  • Kosciusko First United Methodist: Accepting donations of bottled water or monetary donations for storm victims in Holmes County. Please bring to church office by Tuesday, May 3 at 10:00 am. Will be delivered Tuesday, May 2 after lunch.
  • Long Creek Elementary School: Accepting donated candles, canned goods, or water (case of 24 or more). Items can be dropped off at Long Creek Elementary school office by 2:30 pm, Wednesday, May 3, 2017.

Baptist hospital groups in Mississippi and Memphis merge

Mississippi Baptist Health Systems and the larger Baptist Memorial Health Care of Memphis have completed a merger, creating the largest hospital group in Mississippi.

Executives of the two systems announced the merger Monday, saying it had been completed last month.

Jackson-based Mississippi Baptist had run into trouble in its efforts to computerize health records, with credit rating agencies saying the four-hospital system was having trouble managing patient stays and would have to spend more money. As part of the merger, the four hospitals are installing the system used by Baptist Memorial.

Officials say no layoffs are planned from the combined 16,000 employees.

Mississippi Baptist has hospitals in Jackson, Carthage, Kosciusko and Yazoo City.

The Memphis system has six hospitals in Mississippi; 10 in Tennessee; and one in Arkansas. (AP)

 

Hunter Engineering Stops Production

Vehicle Fire on Veterans Memorial

At 6:25 pm Kosciusko Police and City fire responded to a report of a vehicle fire. The caller said it was located on Veterans Memorial Drive in front of Auto Zone. Firefighters arrived on scene to find a pickup stopped in the turning lane. Units notified dispatch that the fire had been extinguished prior to their arrival.

Captain Cliff Hayes with the Kosciusko Fire Departments tells Breezy News that the driver saw smoke coming into the cab and stopped the vehicle. An employee from Auto Zone came with a fire extinguisher to assist the motorist. Captain Hayes said the fire appeared have have started in the back of the motor compartment by the firewall. No injuries were reported.

Lady Whippets squeeze out a victory against the Houston Hilltoppers

The Lady Whippets softball team plays the first game of a three game series in Kosciusko against the Lady Houston Hilltoppers. The Lady Whippets were the first to score in the bottom of the first inning making the score (2-0). The Lady Hilltoppers hit a home run in the top of the second and the lady Whippets answered back with a run making the score (3-1). The third inning was scoreless. The Lady Hilltoppers scored 1 run in the top of the fourth making the score (3-2). The rest of the game was scoreless while the Lady Whippets took the first victory of the three game series with the score being (3-2) at the bottom of the seventh.

Whippets Fall 4-3 in Extra Innings Ending 2017 Season

The Kosciusko Whippets varsity baseball team hoping to advance to the North State Semifinals are back on Whippets Field tonight for the third and deciding ball game against the Itawamba AHS Indians in round two of the 4A Baseball Tournament. After winning game one 6-4 the Whippets were shut out by the Indians in game two at Fulton  0-10. The Whippets enter the game with an overall season record of 25-5 while the Indians enter with a 17-13 overall record.

The Whippets put up the 1st run in the game in the bottom of the 1st inning to take an early 1-0 lead. No additional runs scored until the Indians tied the game in the top of the 3rd then Kosciusko added 2 more runs in the bottom of the inning increasing their lead to 2 runs, 3-1. Once again the game was tied in the top of the 4th by Itawamba, scoring 2 runs in the inning. No additional runs would be placed on the scoreboard by either team the remainder of the regular innings sending the game into extra innings tied at 3-3. The Indians scored 1 run in the top of the 8th inning and then prevented the Whippets from answering in the bottom of the inning to give Itawamba a 4-3 extra innings win over the Whippets ending the season for Kosciusko. Itawamba advances to play Ripley in the semifinals of the North State Tournament. Seniors Jeremy Deason, Jerod Meggs, Jatavious Herron, and Loftin Price were named tonight’s Autumn Ridge Dental players of the game. Boswell Media Sports congratulate all the players and coaches for another outstanding season of Whippets baseball.

On April 28, 2017, Jeffery Perteet, a 23-year-old black male, was arrested for domestic violence and petit larceny on West Adams Street by Officer Devante  Lewis.

On April 29, 2017 Nathaniel Sam, a 27-year-old Indian male, was arrested for public drunk and disobeying a police officer on Fairground Street by Officer Casey Pounders.

On April 29, 2017 Khalil Brown, an 18-year-old black male, was arrested for possession of marijuana on Martin Luther King Drive by Officer Chase Voyles.

On April 29, 2017 Charles Williams, a 26-year-old white male, was arrested for no driver’s license, no insurance, DUI (Second Offense), possession of paraphernalia, and possession of controlled substance on Highway 12 East by Lt. Tommy Pender.

April 28, 2017, Joshua Brunt, a 25-year-old white male, was arrested for no tag, no driver’s license, and no insurance on West Jefferson Street by Officer Devante Lewis.

April 26, 2017, Jeremy Carr, a 29-year-old black male, was arrested for Possession of Controlled Substance,Possession of Marijuana in a Vehicle, and Driving while License are Suspended on Crawford Street by Investigator Greg Collins.

April 26, 2017, Melvin Moore, a 37-year-old black male, was arrested for Possession of Marijuana at North Side Park by Investigator Greg Collins.

April 26, 2017 Josh Stroud, a 35-year-old white male, was arrested for Contempt of Court by Officer Cody Williams, with the assistance of the Attala County Sheriffs Department.

April 26, 2017 Miranda Moore, a 22 y.o white feamale, was arrested for Contempt of Court by Officer Cody Williams, with the assistance of the Attala County Sheriffs Department.

April 27, 2017 Johnny Dotson, a 28-year-old black male, was arrested for Possession of Marijuana in Vehicle and Suspended Drivers License on Highway 12 East by Officer Martin Roby.

On April 26, 2017, Richard Burnside, a 37-year-old black male, from Philadelphia was arrested for driving with a suspended driver’s license on Highway 35 South by Officer Kenny Barron.

 

 

 

 

 


Financial Assistance available for farms damaged during storms

Attala County farmers who suffered damage from the April 30 storms may be eligible for financial assistance.

The assistance would aid farmers in repairing fences and removing debris.

The damage must be large enough that a financial hardship would be created for the producer to rehabilitate the damage without federal assistance.

Anyone that wishes to apply for assistance should take pictures of the damage and contact the Attala County FSA office to file a report.

Timber stands with extensive blow down damage to be cut and replanted due to storm damage may also be considered for assistance.

The extent of damage must be documented before any actions to harvest are taken.

The availability of funding is limited and applications should be submitted prior to carrying out the work.

The Attala County FSA office is located at 502 Veterans Memorial Dr. in Kosciusko and can be reached via phone at 662-290-0702 (Ext. 2).

Lady Whippets advance to the North State championship round

The Lady Whippets come into game two of a three game series against the Houston Hilltoppers in Houston. The Lady Whippets made a strong push in the top of the first inning having three runs making the score (3-0).  The Lady Hilltoppers answered back with a run in the bottom of the second making the score (3-1).  The third inning was scoreless. The Lady Whippets scored one run in the top of the fourth increasing the lead by one making the score (4-1). The fifth inning was scoreless. The lady whippets  scored their last run in the top of the sixth making while continuing leaving the Hilltoppers run less in four straight innings. The HIlltoppers fought back hard gaining two runs in the bottom of the seventh but not enough to gain the victory. The Lady Whippets win the second game of the playoff  series with a score of (5-3). The Whippets advance to the North State Championship two times in a row. Keep a watch on updates to tell you when and where they are playing next. Congratulations Lady Whippets.

Hunter Engineering has reopened for business.  They were closed due to Sundays’ storm that hit Durant.    All employees are asked to report to work as usual.
