Unemployment

Mississippi’s labor market was flat in September, with unemployment and payrolls steady.

The state’s unemployment rate remained at 6 percent for third straight month, but was below September 2015’s 6.4 percent. The number of workers and people reporting jobs each rose slightly. The number of unemployed people remained at 76,000.

Mississippi had September’s fourth-highest jobless rate among states, with Alaska worst at 6.9 percent. The nationwide jobless rate rose to 5 percent in September from 4.9 percent in August.

The separate payroll survey, used by many economists as their top labor market indicator, was unchanged from August at 1.14 million. That’s about 8,000 over September 2015 levels, but 1.5 percent below Mississippi’s pre-recession peak.

The U.S. Labor Department released both sets of figures Friday, adjusted to cancel out seasonal changes. (AP)

Road work completed at dangerous intersection

If you’ve driven south of out Kosciusko on Hwy 35 recently, then you may have noticed changes at a hazardous intersection.

The City of Kosciusko and Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) have completed work at the intersection of Hwy 35 and S Huntington St.

New lanes and stop signs are  in place to hopefully make the intersection a little safer for travelers coming off the Natchez Trace.

“As it’s been mentioned in the past, part of the process for the bike paths downtown was to find a way to get cyclists off the Natchez Trace as safely as possible,” said Kosciusko Mayor Jimmy Cockroft. “One option that was presented to MDOT was a round-a-bout and obviously, that would have been a difficult thing to do in that location, so MDOT looked in to the situation for us and came up with the design there now. Hopefully when everyone gets used to the new design it will be much safer not only for cyclist, but for vehicle traffic as well.”

With the original set-up, travelers pulling across Hwy 35 had to cross five lanes of traffic to get to the Natchez Trace/S Huntington.

The new additions make is safer by dropping the number of lanes to three.
