Due to the recent closing of the Attala County Jail, Sheriff Tim Nail says that residents of Attala County should get in the habit of calling 911 during certain hours.

Nail says that his office and the E-911 dispatch are close to completing the changeover with the jail phone lines.

The Sheriffs Office (662-289-5556) can still be reached during normal business hours, but after 5:00 pm and on weekends, that line will forwarded to the city’s 911 dispatch center.

The E911 Communications Center is operated by the city, however the county is considering hiring extra help to ease the load on the dispatchers.

Both city and county officials want to urge residents to begin dialing 911 for an emergency during weekend and evening hours, instead of the 289-5556 number for the ACSO.

Mississippi Releases 2015-16 School District Grades

The Mississippi Department of Education released 2015-16 ratings on an A to F scale for the state’s school districts and charter schools Thursday.

After a new test and a recalibrated grading system, the typical Mississippi public school and school district rates a C.

This year’s grades are not strictly comparable to last year’s because of several factors, including a new standardized test.

The 2015-2016 grades are the first in several years that count for everyone.

For two years in a row, schools or districts got waivers to use higher grades earned earlier because of changing state teaching standards and tests.

Nine districts statewide are beating the odds and improving their grades, usually thanks to strong growth in student test scores. Such growth accounts for 40 percent of a district’s grade.

Among districts rated F is 28,000-student Jackson, the state’s second largest. After their first year, Mississippi’s first two charter schools rate as D and F, respectively.

Local School District ratings:

  • Neshoba County – B
  • Scott County – B
  • Choctaw County – C
  • Kosciusko – C
  • Grenada – C
  • Attala County – C
  • Louisville – C
  • Forest – C
  • Philadelphia – C
  • Winona – D
  • Leake County – D
  • Durant – D
  • Holmes County – F
  • Montgomery County – F

Hosemann says Mississippi election systems are secure

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says he is taking “every possible precaution” to protect Mississippi’s election system from hacking or other security risks.

Circuit clerks and elections officials in several counties also say they’re working on security ahead of the Nov. 8 election.

Republican Hosemann says Thursday that his staff does daily monitoring of the Statewide Elections Management System, a database with voter registration information. He says the state’s roughly 7,000 voting machines aren’t connected to the internet, which means they are not vulnerable to hacking.

Two of the largest counties in the state, Hinds and Harrison, use paper ballots that are scanned at each precinct.

In Lafayette County, Circuit Clerk Baretta J. Mosley says election workers have switched to stronger, more complicated passwords to connect to electronic voting systems. (AP)
