Pearl River Resort celebrates 25 years (Video)

The Pearl River Resort opened its doors back in 1994, with the Silver Star Casino. 25 years later, the resort has expanded to include the Golden Moon Hotel and Casino, Dancing Rabbit Golf Club, Geyser Falls and Bok Homa Casino.

“The 25th anniversary is a big deal, when you have a business that has longevity like we have, people see that and they take notice and they want to be a part of it. As much as we have with food, entertainment, gaming, there is certainly something for everyone to enjoy,” said Public Relations Director Erica Moore.

Moore said maintaining a business for 25 years isn’t easy, but it’s always worth it. Now, folks are ready to celebrate the journey.

“We’re going to continue our celebration with Leona Lewis coming on July 3rd. Right after that on July 4th we have our ‘Spectacular Fireworks Show’ and we invite the public to attend that. Following that, we also have the Charlie Daniels Band. They’ll be coming on July 5th. We’re going to keep going and end things on the 6th with Morris Day and the Time,” said Moore.

Moore said the resort wouldn’t be where it is today without the help of over 2,000 employees, many of whom have been with the resort all 25 years. She also said the community has a lot to do with its success.

“We want to say a big thank you to everyone in the community and the surrounding areas who have come here and been a part of our family for 25 years,” said Moore.

You can join in on the festivities. Tickets for those events are still available online on the Pearl River Resort website.

Today is Wednesday, July 3, the 184th day of 2019. There are 181 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On July 3, 1976, Israel launched its daring mission to rescue 106 passengers and Air France crew members being held at Entebbe (en-TEH’-bee) Airport in Uganda (yoo-GAHN’-dah) by pro-Palestinian hijackers; the commandos succeeded in rescuing all but four of the hostages.

On this date:

In 1775, Gen. George Washington took command of the Continental Army at Cambridge, Massachusetts.

In 1863, the three-day Civil War Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania ended in a major victory for the North as Confederate troops failed to breach Union positions during an assault known as Pickett’s Charge.

In 1890, Idaho became the 43rd state of the Union.

In 1944, during World War II, Soviet forces recaptured Minsk from the Germans.

In 1950, the first carrier strikes of the Korean War took place as the USS Valley Forge and the HMS Triumph sent fighter planes against North Korean targets.

In 1971, singer Jim Morrison of The Doors died in Paris at age 27.

In 1979, Dan White, convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting deaths of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone (mahs-KOH’-nee) and Supervisor Harvey Milk, was sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison. (He ended up serving five years.)

In 1987, British millionaire Richard Branson and Per Lindstrand became the first hot-air balloon travelers to cross the Atlantic, parachuting into the sea as their craft went down off the Scottish coast.

In 1988, the USS Vincennes shot down an Iran Air jetliner over the Persian Gulf, killing all 290 people aboard.

In 1996, Russians went to the polls to re-elect Boris Yeltsin president over his Communist challenger, Gennady Zyuganov (geh-NAH’-dee zhoo-GAH’-nahf), in a runoff.

In 2003, the U.S. put a $25 million bounty on Saddam Hussein, and $15 million apiece for his two sons. (The $30 million reward for Odai and Qusai Hussein went to a tipster whose information led U.S. troops to their hideout, where the brothers were killed in a gunbattle.)

In 2013, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Mohammed Morsi, was overthrown by the military after just one year by the same kind of Arab Spring uprising that had brought the Islamist leader to power.

Ten years ago: In a surprise announcement, Sarah Palin said she would resign as Alaska governor, effective July 26, 2009. Vice President Joe Biden visited Baghdad, where he pressed Iraqi leaders to do more to foster national reconciliation and offered U.S. assistance in achieving that goal.

Five years ago: Hurricane Arthur struck North Carolina as a Category 2 storm with winds of 100 mph in the late evening, taking about five hours to move across the far eastern part of the state, but causing far less damage than feared.

One year ago: The Trump administration said it would not encourage schools to use race as a factor in the admissions process, rescinding guidance from the Obama era that was meant to promote diversity.

A Mississippi man is charged with two counts of murder after a pregnant woman was killed days before her baby was due.

Holmes County Sheriff Willie March says 33-year-old Terrence K. Sample was arrested Monday, hours after the body of 21-year-old Makayla Winston was found.

Mississippi is one of 38 states with a fetal homicide law. March says Sample is charged with kidnapping, capital murder for the baby’s death and murder for Winston’s death. It wasn’t clear whether Sample has an attorney.

March says Winston’s family describes Sample as her boyfriend, and investigators believe Sample also was romantically involved with another woman.

March says people saw Winston and Sample together Thursday night, a week before the baby’s due date. March says tests will show how and when she was killed. (AP)

Stay safe this Fourth of July with these Fireworks Safety Tips (Audio)

The 4th of July means family, fun, and fireworks.

And while fireworks are a fun holiday tradition, they should be handled with care.

Kosciusko Fire Chief Duane Burdine says there are a few simple measures to take to keep fireworks from causing a larger fire situation.

In addition to Chief Burdine’s warnings, the National Council on Fireworks Safety recommends the following safety tips to ensure your family has a safe holiday weekend:

  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.
  • A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities.  Never give fireworks to children.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.  Save your alcohol for after the show.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.
  • Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework.  Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
  • Never carry fireworks in your POCKET or shoot them into METAL or GLASS containers.
  • Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
  • Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.
  • Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.
