Attala County Farmers Market returning this weekend

Spring time means it’s just about time for the return of the Attala County Farmers Market.

This year’s  grand opening is set for Saturday, May 11.

The market will feature

turnip & mustard greens, sugar snap beans, onion, radish, herbs and garlic, honey, baked goods, and fresh farm eggs.

There will also be a selection of starter plants for tomatoes, peppers, herbs and more.

The Attala County Farmers Market is located at the intersection of Hwys 12 & 35. Hours of operation are 8:00 am – noon.

Continue to buy local, eat fresh, and live well.

McAdams football player signs with Belhaven

McAdams High School football player Kendrioun Boatman has signed a letter of intent to play football for Belhaven University.

Boatman played both offensive and defensive line for the Bulldogs.

In his senior season, he recorded 54 tackles and 6 sacks.

Bulldogs Head Coach Jim Risen said Boatman is the first McAdams football player to sign with a 4-year school in over 20 years.

Benefit announced for Winona boy attacked by dogs

A benefit fundraiser has been announced to benefit Aden Green, a 13-year-old boy from Winona attacked and injured by a pack of dogs.

The benefit will be held Saturday, June 1 at the Montgomery County Coliseum in Winona from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm.

The event will include a gospel singing, womanless beauty pageant, live auction, and a silent auction.

Raffles drawings will take place throughout the day.

Activities for kids include inflatables, face painting, and hot air balloon rides.

At 3:56 pm Choctaw county issued a B.O.L.O. for a suspect wanted in connection with an armed robbery of a small convenience or grocery store . According to dispatch the only information available at the time is to be on the look out for a mid-sized black SUV with tinted windrows driven by a black female. The last direction of travel given was traveling in the direction of Attala County. There was no tag number given. If you see a vehicle matching this description please contact the Choctaw Sheriff’s Department at (662) 285-6129 or your local 911 dispatch.

This employee is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing all aspects of municipal financial management and administration.

  • Serves as chief financial advisor to Mayor and Board of Aldermen
  • Plans, organizes, and directs all operations of administrative department
  • Implements and formulates municipal finance policies
  • Serves as chief budget officer and enforces budget limitations
  • Manages debt service transactions, bonds, and disbursing city funds
  • Supervises and conducts regular and special elections
  • Supervises Deputy City Clerks
  • Prepare meeting agendas or packets of related information
  • Responsible for taking minutes and indexing the official records of the municipality

Qualification and Education:

Candidate is recommended to have the following qualities:

  • Degree in Accounting/Finance with Major course work in Business and/or Public Administration
  • Progressively responsible experience in public finance administrative and/or city government.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of public finance administration and business management.
  • Considerable knowledge of general governmental accounting GAAP, and analysis of fiscal data.
  • Ability to effectively supervise other staff members.
  • Some understanding of municipal regulations and law.
  • Excellent computer skills.

Three Vehicle Crash Sends Two to Local Hospital

At 6:43 pm on Saturday night Attala Deputies, MedStat EMS, Sallis Volunteers along with Attala Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a three vehicle MVA. The caller said it was located on Attala Road 4213, also known as Horne’s Grocery Road, near New  Baptist Church.
Emergency personnel arrived on scene and found the road completely blocked and all three vehicles with heavy damage.
According to Attala 8m Sergeant Nick Cox, two patients were transported to Baptist-Attala with what appeared to be minor injures.
There is no word at this time as to the cause of the crash. The Attala County Sheriff’s Department will be in charge of the investigation.

This year’s event is set for Saturday, June 29 at the Jason’s Southern Table in downtown Kosciusko.

The top 15 finalists will perform their chosen song that night for a chance to win a weekend in Muscle Shoals, AL.

The winning song will be professionally recorded and produced at Wishbone Studio and then played on air across the Boswell Media family of stations.

The 2019 Boswell Media MS Songwriter of the Year competition is presented by Prairie Farms and The Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience.

Happening today: Emergency management drill at Ethel High School

Attala County Emergency Management will hold a full scale emergency response drill Monday, May 13 at Ethel High School.

Director Danny Townsend said the drill will begin mid-morning and will involve all city and county emergency services.

Responding units will be dispatched over the radio and crews will respond exactly as they would in any emergency or disaster scenario.

Townsend said he wanted the public to be aware of the event so there’s no confusion or panic when the day comes.

French Camp Frontier Day Part 2 set for May 18

In response to public requests, Frontier Day Director Bo Kirby announced this morning that part 2 of Frontier Day will be held this Saturday, May 18, in historic French Camp.

“Because of the rain, the car show and a number of other exhibitors were not able to join us this past weekend,” said Kirby.  “The car show alone attracts visitors from across the state. This will give out-of-town guests a chance to attend, as well as local and regional visitors who stayed home because of the rain.”

Frontier Day is an annual family-oriented event showcasing the historic village in French Camp.  Admission and parking are both free.  Come out for a fun time this weekend!

The event starts at 8:00 am.  Bluegrass begins at 9:00 am.

On 5-08-2019, Antonio B. Williams, a 30 year old b/m from West, was arrested for Felony Possession of Controlled Substance and Failure to Appear on Maple Street by Officer Elizabeth Miller.

On 5-07-2019, Lonnie B. Campbell, a 45 year old w/m from Kosciusko, was arrested for Petit Larceny, Possession of Marijuana and Misdemeanor Possession of Controlled Substance on East South by Officer Thomas Clark.

On 5-07-2019, Kelli K. Tower, a 54 year old w/f from Kosciusko, was arrested for Contempt of Court on West Adams Street by Officer Michael Jones.

On 5-07-2019, Jamey G. Hutchison, a 31 year old w/m from Kosciusko, was arrested for Contempt of Court and Suspended Drivers License on Highway 35 South by Officer Toweeka Ferguson.

On 5-07-2019, Mickella S. Roby, a 21 year old b/f from Sallis, was arrested for (2) counts of Failure to Appear in Court on Highway 12 East by Lt. Cody Williams.

On 5-07-2019, James Johnson, a 43 year old w/m from Pearl, was arrested for DUI 2nd Offense on Highway 35 South by Lt. Cody Williams.

On 5-06-2019, William R. Sharp, a 46 year old w/m from Ovett, MS was arrested for Suspended Drivers License, No Proof of Insurance and Speeding on Highway 35 North by Officer Robert Overby.

On 5-06-2019, Anthony A. Manson, a 29 year old b/m from Kosciusko, was arrested for Disposal of a Stolen Weapon on North Natchez Street by Officer Michael Jones.

Awards announced at annual KHS Athletic Banquet

The best in Kosciusko Whippets’ sports from the 2018 – 2019 season were honored Monday night at the annual Athletic Banquet.

The evening began with a meal for all players and coaches.

Following the meal, parents and members of the community joined the festivities as coaches from 16 teams took to the podium to hand out awards to the best athletes of the year.
