Central Mississippi readies for fair season

Residents of central Mississippi are preparing for the annual Choctaw Indian Fair and the Neshoba County Fair.

The Choctaw Indian Fair kicks off this week with carnival rides, food vendors, stickball and entertainment. Fairgoers will have the opportunity to learn more about the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians throughout this fair.

“This fair, you have the chance to see an actual Indian basket being made from start to finish. There is beadwork, traditional social dancing and just kind of a little bit of the culture that the Choctaw Indian nation keeps going,” says Executive Director of the Philadelphia-Neshoba Chamber of Commerce, Tim Moore.

Events from the Neshoba County Fair, also known as ‘Mississippi’s Giant House Party,’ include horse racing, concerts, chair racing and other amusements. This fair plays a unique part in the history of Neshoba County.

“It started out as an agricultural fair in the local community,” Moore said. “The fair continues to do that through the exhibit hall. There are over 600 cabins. They are unique in the fact that this is the one week where they come to life. You can sleep up to as many as 30 or 40 people in some cabins or as little as 10 or 12.”

Both fairs draw in patrons from all over the country, which impacts the area economically.

“We have a lot of good things going for us,” said David Vowell, President of Community Development Partnership. “I was just looking back at some sales tax diversion figures. Back in 2013, the amount of sales tax diversion that came back to the city of Philadelphia was like $3.9 million. This year we are on target to get about $4.6 million. We are having a gradual growth because of all these little things growing into big things. We are proud of our community and the support we have,”

The Choctaw Indian Fair kicks off this Wednesday and will last until Saturday. Tickets are $20 for a season pass and $12 for a day pass. Children under five get in free. The Neshoba County fair will be July 27 through August 3.

Park Rangers to add unmarked vehicles to Parkway patrols

Rangers will now be using unmarked vehicles to patrol the Natchez Trace Parkway.

After a six month pilot program showed a dramatic increase in the number of traffic stops for distracted and aggressive driving, the decision was made to order additional unmarked units. The order includes both typical and non-typical law enforcement vehicles such as full size SUVs and pickup trucks.

“They are not all white in color either,” said Chief Ranger Sarah Davis. “Some of the vehicles might be black, silver, blue, red, or even green. We are not trying to be tricky, we just want to make sure drivers are not on their phones and they are driving the speed limit.”

For anyone with concerns about so called blue-light bandits, or people pretending to be police officers, don’t worry. These vehicles will blend into day to day traffic but are unmistakable as emergency vehicles once the emergency lighting is activated. “You will definitely know it’s a law enforcement officer,” said District Ranger and vehicle coordinator John Hearne. “These vehicles will have multiple flashing red and blue lights, headlights and grill lights; it will look like a police Christmas tree when they light up.”

Since the Parkway travels through three states, law enforcement ranger vehicles use both red and blue lights instead of just blue lights which are standard in Mississippi. Rangers use both colors because red lights are easier to see in the daylight and blue at night. Safety is the number one priority on the Parkway and the multi colored lights make it safer for both the Ranger and drivers.

A company that processes chicken into breasts and tenders will hire 450 more people, expanding production in central Mississippi.

Pearl River Foods opened in 2017 in Carthage with 150 workers. The company said Thursday that about 100 new jobs are already filled.

Mississippi Development Authority spokesman Jeff Rent says the state is providing $500,000 to train workers.

The company invested $2 million when it leased a government-owned building in 2017, aided by $1.67 million in federal and local grants. Pearl River Foods later constructed a neighboring building.

Pearl River Foods partner Phillip Jones says the company plans additional growth.

The company was founded by four owners of Victory Foods of Gainesville, Georgia, and two new partners, but isn’t a sister company.

Rent says he doesn’t know how much workers make. (AP)

Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley announced today that the PSC has charged six telemarketers for violating Mississippi’s No-Call law. The PSC’s investigation found that these companies made 68 illegal calls to Mississippians. Should these entities be found to have violated the No-Call law, they are subject to a $5,000 per call fine; totaling $340,000. Notices of alleged violations have been recently filed against the following companies:
  • Atlantic Auto Protection, Miami, Florida
  • Donor Relations, Las Vegas, Nevada
  • PPLS, Miami, Florida
  • Inbound Fetching, Beaverton, Oregon
  • Alliance, Irvine, California
  • American Helping Hands, Birmingham, Alabama

“We are committed to charging every, single predatory telemarketer that violates the No-Call law. Mississippians deserve to have their privacy protected. This action sends a message to these companies and others that if you invade the privacy of our citizens, the PSC is coming after you,” said Commissioner Presley.

Presley encouraged Mississippians to download the PSC’s new smartphone app, which can be found by searching “PSC No-Call” in the iTunes App Store or Google Play Marketplace. The app allows citizens to immediately report calls to the PSC from their cell phones. Also, landline phones can be registered at www.psc.state.ms.us or by calling Commissioner Presley’s office at 1-800-637-7722

A charge is an allegation in an enforcement action. The companies involved in this investigation will be afforded all rights of due process of law.

The acclaimed new documentary, Farmers For America, will be screened July 13, 2018 at Kosciusko’s Skylight Grill , and will feature a discussion with one of the film’s stars, Attala County FFA Advisor Kenneth Georgia, and Chef Jack Adams of the restaurant.

The documentary traces the remarkable shifts coming to American agriculture as more and more consumers flock to farmers’ markets, embrace farm-to-table lifestyles and insist on knowing where their food comes from. At the center of the film are the farmers, young and old, who provide the spirit and energy to bring urban and rural America together over what both share in common: our food.

The film is narrated by popular TV host and podcaster Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs, Returning the Favor). The film premiered last October during the FFA national convention in Indianapolis, and has been screened widely throughout the country.

FFA Advisor Georgia is one of the film’s most inspiring characters, a teacher who emphasizes to all his students the importance of community service.

“The lesson that comes from that, I can’t even teach the students,” Georgia says in the film. “I tell them that when you get that warm fuzzy feeling inside because you’ve done something great for someone, that’s what it’s all about.”

Besides the film, the screening includes a dinner with a special menu of locally-sourced food by Chef Adams. The film begins at 7 pm, and will then be followed by a panel discussion with Georgia, Adams and the filmmaker, Graham Meriwether. The Kosciusko Attala Partnership (KAP) is helping sponsor the screening as a partner organization.

In 2009, the Junior Auxiliary of Kosciusko established a $1,000 scholarship in loving memory of Rose Dorchuck.

Rose was a life member of Junior Auxiliary and was involved at the local level in Kosciusko as well as the national level for many years.

This scholarship will be awarded to an individual currently attending or returning to college to pursue a second degree or a higher level degree in a child related field of study.

Interested individuals must complete an application and meet specific requirements established by the members of Junior Auxiliary.

The scholarship deadline is July 23.

To receive an application or to make a donation, contact Jill Clark, scholarship chairman, at clark_jill@yahoo.com.
