Carthage native Victoria Vivians’ 21 point performance in Sunday night’s NCAA Women’s National Championship Game wasn’t enought to life the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs against Notre Dame.

Arike Ogunbowale’s 3-pointer with a tenth of a second left to gave Notre Dame its first women’s national championship since 2001.

Notre Dame rallied from a 30-17 halftime deficit to beat Mississippi State 61-58. A last-second shot by Ogunbowale also allowed the Irish to top UConn in the national semifinal on Friday.

The Irish hugged and celebrated on the floor as confetti fell from the Nationawide Arena rafters.

Vivians’ 21 points led all scorers. Her teammate Teaira McCowan had 18 points and 17 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Jessica Shepard had 19 points for Notre Dame, and Ogunbowale had 18.

Notre Dame was playing in its fifth title game in the last eight years. The Irish lost the previous four. (AP)

The Attala County Board of Supervisors held its first meeting of April on Monday.

A majority of the meeting was spent in discussion with John Wiggers from North Central Planning & Development District concerning a CDBG grant. Funds from the grant would be used for repairs and work on the Attala County Courthouse.

The board voted to apply for the grant and set a public hearing for Friday, April 20 as a part of the Citizen Participation Plan portion of the application process.

Also during the Monday’s meeting, Attala County resident Chip Hawkins spoke to the board about the growing litter problem throughout the county. Hawkins said he has gathered volunteers to help pick up trash along highways leading out of town on Saturday, April 21 to coincide with the annual city clean up day.

He asked the board for help providing garbage bags, trash pickers, deputies to help slow traffic near workers on that day, and help removing the trash once its bagged.

Board president Charles Fancher expressed frustration over the state not helping to keep the roads cleaned, but thanked Hawkins for his willingness to come forward and try to help find a solution.

Board Attorney Scott Pickle, District Five Supervisor Tim Pinkard, and Kosciusko Mayor Jimmy Cockroft all made mention of how several citizens have been voluntarily working to pick up litter in different areas of the county.

While no official action was taken, board members did say they would be willing to help with materials and picking up the trash after it has been bagged.

Attala County Sheriff Tim Nail also said he would get deputies to help monitor traffic near volunteers.

Additional business from Monday’s meeting:

  • The board heard from Mrs. Charla Grace with the Attala County Library about the upcoming National Library Week.
  • The board voted to recognize the week of April 8 – April 15 as National Telecommunicators Week at the request of E-911 Director Liz Peteet.
  • The board approved the third quarter budget for the Sheriff and Tax Collector.
