Lake Pushmataha to undergo repairs

Lake Pushmataha, located in the Pearl River Community in Neshoba County, will be undergoing some mandatory dam repairs to meet new safety requirements. The repairs will be begin in late spring of 2018. Prior to repair activities, Choctaw Wildlife and Parks has lowered water levels at the lake to help decrease some pressure on the levee structure. The lake is still open and boaters are asked to use caution when launching their boats.

At 6:54 am Kosciusko Police and City Fire responded to a report of a broiler fire at Burger King. Emergency personnel arrived on scene and reported that no smoke was showing from the building. Firefighters quickly located the fire and extinguished the flames before there was any damage. No injuries were reported.

Possession of marijuana, simple assault, and other recent arrests

On March 18, 2018, Natasha Armstrong, a 23-year-old black female, was arrested for possession of marijuana on Wells Street by Officer Jamie Eaves.

On March 18, 2018, Joshua Primer, a 26-year-old black male, was arrested for seat belt, possession of marijuana, and simple assault on North Wells Street by Officer Jamie Eaves.

On March 17, 2018, Marvin Hill, a 29-year-old black male, was arrested for possession of marijuana in a vehicle, possession of paraphernalia, suspended driver’s license, possession of a stolen weapon, and possession of a controlled substance on West Jefferson Street by Officer Cody Williams.

On March 17, 2018, Kentaiss Vance, a 38-year-old black male, was arrested for possession of marijuana on West Jefferson Street by Officer Cody Williams.

On March 17, 2018, Lorena Weaver, a 21-year-old white female, was arrested for possession of paraphernalia on Chatwin Street by Officer Jamie Eaves.

On March 16, 2018, Richard Dickerson, a 32-year-old white male, was arrested for shoplifting (1st offense) on Highway 12 by Officer Robert Rushton.

On March 12, 2018, Ratrae Carter, a 21-year-old black male, from was arrested for possession of marijuana on North Street by Investigator Greg Collins.

On March 12, 2018, Gabriel Gale, a 21-year-old black male, was arrested for failure to appear in court, no driver’s license, and switched tag on North Street by Investigator Greg Collins.

On March 12, 2018, Christopher Odom, a 47-year-old white male, was arrested for possession of paraphernalia on West Adams Street by Officer Jamie Eaves.

On March 10, 2018, Brandon Sweeny, a 23-year-old white male, was arrested for paraphernalia on Goodman Street by Officer Robert Rushton.

On March 10, 2018, Kelly Keith, a 40-year-old white female, was arrested for possession of paraphernalia on Highway 12 East by Officer Robert Rushton.

On March 5, 2018, James Starling, a 67-year-old black male, was arrested for possession of marijuana on Highway 12 West by Officer Robert Rushton.

On March 6, 2018, Kala Keith, a 39-year-old white female, was arrested for possession of controlled substance (felony), possession of marijuana in a Vehicle, and possession of paraphernalia on North Natchez Street by Officer Robert Rushton.

On March 6, 2018, Christopher Bell, a 22-year-old white male, was arrested for contempt of court on North Natchez Street by Officer Robert Rushton.

On March 7, 2018, Quavon Hannah, a 24-year-old black male, was arrested for contempt of court and no driver’s license on South Huntington Street by Officer Josh Pinkard.

Annual Passion Play set for March 28 – 31

An Easter tradition is set to return to downtown Kosciusko next week.

“His Last Days: The Passion Play,” presented by Kosciusko First United Methodist Church, will be held March 29 – 31.

The event has become an Easter Tradition not only in Kosciusko, but throughout central and north Mississippi.

Churches from several different communities bring groups to experience the portrayal of events leading up the crucifixion.

The play is performed on the lawn of FUMC at the corner of Washington and Natchez Streets in downtown Kosciusko.

12 and 35 Crash Sends One to Hospital

At 1:36 pm Kosciusko Police, MedStat EMS along with City Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a two vehicle MVA at the highway 12 and 35 south intersection at Wendy’s.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene to find traffic blocked. Officers requested MedStat after the the driver of one of the cars complained of back pain.

MedStat transported one patient to Baptist-Attala for medical treatment. The is no word on the extent of their injuries.

HCC Attala Center to host legal workshop for seniors

Holmes Community College The Attala Center will host a legal workshop for senior citizens on Friday, April 13.

Attorneys from North Mississippi Rural Legal Services will be on hand discuss the importance of planning documents, such as a will, power of attorney and advanced health care directive.

The workshop will be held in Room 130 from 10:00 am – noon.

Attendees can then register to receive free document drafting for all seniors over the age of 60, regardless of income.  There is no charge for this service.

If you are age 60 or over and a resident of Mississippi and in need of a last will and testament, advanced health care directive and power of attorney, the North Mississippi Rural Legal Services Elder Law Project is able to provide these and many other services, free of charge.

If you are unable to attend, but would like to apply for these services, please call Al Cutturini at 662-234-2918 x 2119.

Long Creek Elementary students visit theme park

On Saturday, March 10, the students of Long Creek who scored proficient/advanced in 2 or more areas on their 2016-2017 State MAPS test were rewarded with a trip to Six Flags over Georgia.

Long Creek faculty and staff would like to congratulate the students on their hard work.

Special thanks is given to the STARS committee, Attala County Federal Programs, teachers/staff, parents/chaperones, LCE Cafeteria Staff, PTO, as well as BSCI Charter Bus Line for their help in making this trip successful.

Matt Tucker will be portraying Jesus Christ in Kosciusko First United Methodist Church’s annaual production of “His Last Days: The Passion Play” next week.

He stopped by the Breezy 101 studio Friday morning to talk more about the event

The play will be performed nightly Thursday March 29 – Saturday, March 31 on the lawn of FUMC at the corner of Washington and Natchez Streets in downtown Kosciusko.

Burglary Suspect Calls for Help

On Tuesday March 21, 2018, at approximately 9:30 am, Attala Deputies were dispatched to a residence on Attala Road 2132 in McCool for an alarm call.

A neighbor heard the alarm, and while investigating the home found a male in the residence.

Sheriff Tim Nail tells Breezy News the suspect, attempting to flee the home, jumped from a second story window and ran into a storage building.

While deputies were en-route, 911 dispatch received a call from the suspect asking for deputies to help him and remove him from the situation.

Deputies arrived on scene and found the subject hiding in a shed on the property. After checking the area, deputies found that Bear Creek Church, located near the home, had been broken into. The church had been vandalized but nothing taken. After questioning, the male admitted to the second break in.

Sheriff Nail said Dwayne Martin, a black male from Ethel, has been charged with two counts of burglary. Martin is currently being held in the Leake County Correction Facility. Bond has been set at $10,000 on each count.

 

 


Library hosts blood drive for Journey Cummins

On Tuesday, March 20, the Attala County Library held a blood drive through Mississippi Blood Services for Journey Cummins.

Journey, the 21-month-old daughter of Ryan and Tara Cummins, is currently battling cancer and sometimes requires blood transfusions.

Fifty-one individuals registered and 48 donors were able to give.

Whippets Fall to Warriors in Extra Innings

The Kosciusko Whippets Baseball team back on Whippet Field tonight to play the Nanih Waiya Warriors in a non conference High School Baseball game. The Region 4-4A Whippets enter tonight’s game 5-4 on the season while the Region 5-1A Warriors enter the contest with an 9-1 overall season record. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 2nd inning when the Whippets put the first two runs on the scoreboard, taking a 2-0 lead in the game. The Whippets increased their lead to four runs after scoring two in the bottom of the 4th inning, 4-0. The Warriors put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the 5th inning to cut the Whippets lead to three runs, 4-1. The top of the 6th inning belonged to the Warriors,scoring three runs to tie the game at 4-4. The game remained tied going into the final inning, the Warriors were unable to score in the top of the inning giving the Whippets a chance to win it in the bottom of the 7th inning, but with 2 outs and the bases loaded, the Whippets failed to score sending the game into extra innings. It was quickly realized that the Warriors play best in the 8th inning as they added another 5 runs to take a 9-4 lead in the game. The Whippets were unable to add any runs in the bottom of the 8th inning giving the Warriors the extra innings win by the final score of 9-4 over the Whippets. Justin Nunn was named tonight’s Autumn Ridge Dental Player of the game.

Miss Natchez Trace Festival Pageant set for April 6

Festival season is quickly approaching, and that means it’s almost time to crown another Miss Natchez Trace Festival.

This year’s event is set for Friday, April 6 at 7:00 pm at the Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center.

The pageant is open to girls in Attala County in grades 0-12.

Age groups are 0 -12 months, 13 – 24 months, 3 – 4, 5 – 6, 7 – 9, 10- 11, 6th – 9th grades, and Miss Natchez Trace Festival will be 10th – 12th grades.

The entry fee for contestants is $25. Photogenic will be $5 extra for 0 – 9th grades. Tickets for the public are $6.

The deadline to register for the pageant is Monday, April 2.
