Holmes county town suffering through financial crisis
A tiny town in the Mississippi Delta has a stack of bills and not enough money to pay them.
Tchula Mayor General Vann tells the Greenwood Commonwealth that the town of 2,100 residents had only about $7,000 in the bank this month.
He says Tchula owes the IRS more than $54,000 for employees’ taxes. It owes the state about $68,000 for assessments from tickets and fines.
Vann and the current aldermen took office in July. He says the debts date back to previous mayors and aldermen.
The mayor says he is recommending that city employees’ schedules be reduced to 32 hours a week and that most of them, except police officers, take pay cuts. (AP)

Universities, colleges seek more funds, outline budget woes
Leaders of Mississippi’s eight public universities are ringing alarm bells about state funding, saying they could lose their ability to compete if funding cuts from recent years aren’t restored.
In presentations Monday to legislators, Higher Education Commissioner Glenn Boyce and university presidents warned that Mississippi could fall further behind the nation economically if its universities can’t keep pace.
Leaders of the state’s 15 community colleges make a similar case, although in less dire terms, noting Mississippi’s 15 community colleges laid off employees and raised tuition by an average of 13 percent last spring.
Universities and community colleges seek big funding increases. But preliminary recommendations would give universities 15 percent less in general funds in next year’s budget than what they spent in 2016. Community colleges would get 12 percent less. (AP)
