It’s time to ring in the new year and local fire officials want to remind you to be responsible when celebrating with fireworks.

Fireworks are fun, but can also be dangerous.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks were involved in an estimated 10,500 injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments in 2014.

Kosciusko Fire Chief Duane Burdine says that are a few simple measures to take to keep fireworks from causing a larger fire situation.

In addition to those warnings, the National Council on Fireworks Safety recommends the following safety tips to ensure your family has a safe holiday weekend:

  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.
  • A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities.  Never give fireworks to children.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.  Save your alcohol for after the show.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.
  • Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework.  Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
  • Never carry fireworks in your POCKET or shoot them into METAL or GLASS containers.
  • Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
  • Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.

School funding, budget and roads headline 2017 Legislature

Mississippi’s 174 legislators will return to the Capitol Tuesday, starting a 90-day legislative session that will run as late as April 2.

There will be touches of festivity, including events celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mississippi becoming a state in 1817, part of the lead-up to the actual date in December.

But leaders are setting an ambitious agenda that could include changes to the state’s public school funding formula.

Other main themes will be efforts to cut budgets to make up for a projected decline in state revenue and continued wrangling over whether Mississippians should pay more in taxes to help maintain roads and bridges.

Debate could also touch on changes to campaign finance and election laws, the state flag and spending a windfall from the 2010 oil spill. (AP)

Southeastern Professional Finals Rodeo is coming to Neshoba County Coliseum Jan. 6-7.

Cowboys and girls are competing to take home the gold. Southeastern Professional Finals Rodeo is coming back to Neshoba County for a 5th time.

“It has become our home for the Southeastern Professional Rodeo Finals,” says Bill Hudson, chairman of SPRA. “It’s a perfect little community here that supports the rodeo. We’ve got some great, great sponsors here.”

Something new this year is the youth rodeo finals that will take place starting at 10 a.m. prior to the main events that begin at 7 p.m. January 6 and 7.

“Come on out to their finals, says Hudson. “It’s one ticket, one price. If you pay to get in the youth finals, you pay to get in that night so you get two shows for the price of one.”

These competitors have been racking up points throughout the year to make it to the finals.

“You’re going to see the best bareback riders, saddle bronc riders, steer wrestlers, team ropers, barrel racers,” Hudson said.

And of course, bull riders. You’ll see the top 15 in the southeast compete for that 8 seconds of glory.

The rodeo is kid-friendly. Kid’s Night will be Friday night. There will be a jumper and mechanical bull.

“Got a super great, funny man coming this year,” says Hudson. “This will be his third time, second time coming to Philadelphia, but third time being voted Southeastern Professional Finals funny man of the year.”

Not only do attendees get to watch the competitions, but they have the opportunity to meet the acts performing.

Advance tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for children. Tickets at the gate each night will be $12 and $10. Click the attached link to get a coupon for half-off children’s tickets.

Bill would let school boards fill superintendent vacancies

Superintendents

Mississippi lawmakers are considering a measure that would let school boards appoint replacements for elected school superintendents who resign in the next three years.

In 2016, the Legislature enacted a law making all 55 elected superintendents, included the Attala County School District’s, appointed beginning in 2020.

Webster County Superintendent Jack Treloar, who was elected, resigned Dec. 31. House Education Committee Chairman John Moore, a Brandon Republican, says it would cost the county $60,000 to elect a school chief to serve only part of a term.

House Bill 32 would allow school boards to appoint superintendents to fill any vacancy in the state.

Moore says lawmakers must move quickly on the bill to beat a deadline requiring Webster County to set an election within 10 days, explaining his committee’s unusual action on the session’s first day. (AP)
