Mrs. Kelly: Kosciusko’s local legend (video)

With Halloween quickly approaching, many people are seeking out a good ghost story.

Those in Kosciusko won’t have to search far, as the town boasts a scary tale known throughout the state.

The statue of Mrs. Laura Kelly, located in the City Cemetery on S Huntington Street, is the subject of many stories and superstitions.

According to local historians, Mrs. Laura V. Kelly died in 1890 at the age of 38. Following her death, the statue was made in Italy after her husband, Mr. C. Clay Kelly, sent an Italian sculptor a picture of his late wife in her wedding dress.

Legend also says that Mr. Kelly added an extra story to his house so that he could see the monument from the top floor. That house is located at 309 E Jefferson street.

For years, older siblings have tried to scare their younger brother or sisters by telling them that the statue comes to life and points at innocent passers by.

“When I was a kid, we were told that there was a button on the statue you could press that would make her head spin around,” said Boswell Media President Johnny Boswell.

The statue was damaged in 2015 and efforts are currently under way to raise fund for repairs.

Mrs. Kelly’s great-grandaughter, Laura Ann Hooff Kline, recently published “The Lady of the Cemetary,” a book that contains family history and other stories about the statue and legend.

Those books can be purchased at the Kosciusko-Attala Partnership (KAP). The prices are $50 for hard copies and $25 for paperback. All money raised from book sales will go towards the fund to help rebuild the statue.

The KAP also has children’s books for sale, written by local authors, and those proceeds will also benefit the repair fund.

If you have a favorite story about the Mrs. Kelly statue or any other local ghost story, sound off in the comments section.

The forestry commission said in a news release the accident happened Thursday while the private landowner was burning an agricultural field.

The commission said the fire spread quickly and overtook the man during his attempts to put out the wildfire.

Montgomery County is one of 62 Mississippi counties under a burn ban.

State Forester Charlie Morgan said extreme drought conditions in the area caused the fire to spread quickly.

Coroner Allen Pratt says an autopsy will be performed to identify the body and determine a cause of death. (AP).
