Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Brett Favre and other legendary Mississippi sports heroes were the topic of discussion Thursday at the Attala County Library.

Bill Blackwell, Executive Director of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, spoke to teenagers Thursday afternoon during the library’s summer reading program.

From NFL Hall of Famers to Olympic gold medalists, Mississippi has produced a number of notable athletes and coaches.

Currently there are 292 members of the MSHOF, with six more scheduled to be inducted in July.

Blackwell opened the discussion with Rice, Payton, and Favre, but then transitioned to lesser known athletes like Calvin Harris, an Olympic gold medalist, and James “Cool Papa” Bell, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame whom many consider to be the fastest man to ever play the sport.

The teenagers were encouraged to search the library for books relating to Mississippi athletes. Blackwell recommended several written by Mississippi historian, and former MSHOF Director, Rick Cleveland.

Blackwell handed out passes to the HOF for those in attendance and welcomed the teens to visit the museum.
